For this blog, I had the opportunity to engage with a policymaker involved in shaping healthcare policy at the state level. This conversation provided valuable insight into the complexities of policymaking and the role of advocacy in improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Professional Role and Background
The policymaker currently serves in a leadership role related to health and human services, where they are directly involved in reviewing, developing, and advancing healthcare-related legislation. Their professional background includes experience working with community systems, which has informed their understanding of healthcare access, disparities, and system-level challenges.
They described their role as highly collaborative, requiring engagement with multiple stakeholders, including healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders. This collaboration ensures that policy decisions are grounded not only in data but also in the lived experiences of the populations affected.
Policymaking Impact
During our discussion, the policymaker emphasized that one of the most pressing issues is access to care, particularly in underserved and rural communities. Workforce shortages, gaps in services, and barriers to navigating the healthcare system continue to impact health outcomes across the state.
They highlighted the importance of using data to guide decision-making, including population health trends and feedback from community organizations. However, they also noted that policymaking requires balancing evidence with practical constraints such as funding limitations, political priorities, and stakeholder perspectives.
Of particular relevance to my DNP project, the policymaker acknowledged that low health literacy is a significant barrier that often goes unaddressed in traditional policy approaches. They expressed that improving communication, education, and patient understanding could have a meaningful impact on health outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations.
Advocacy Approaches
A key takeaway from this interview was the importance of intentional and strategic advocacy. The policymaker emphasized that effective advocacy involves more than presenting data; it requires building relationships, communicating clearly, and remaining persistent.
They encouraged healthcare professionals to become more involved in the policy process by:
Sharing real-world patient experiences to complement data
Engaging with local and state representatives
Participating in community and professional advocacy efforts
Presenting concise, solution-focused recommendations
They also noted that policymakers are more receptive when information is presented in a clear, accessible way that aligns with current priorities and demonstrates practical impact.
Reflection
This experience provided a deeper understanding of how healthcare policy is shaped at the state level and the challenges involved in creating meaningful change. It reinforced that policymaking is not solely driven by evidence, but also by feasibility, timing, and collaboration.
As a DNP-prepared nurse, this interview highlighted the importance of engaging in advocacy efforts and contributing to policy discussions. Nurses are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between clinical practice and policy by bringing forward patient-centered perspectives and identifying gaps in care.
Moving forward, I feel more prepared and motivated to advocate for policies that address health literacy and improve access to care for women and underserved populations

Hello, great interview and strong reflection that clearly highlight your insights into the interview and its connection to your DNP focus. I like that you discussed the tension between evidence achievability and stakeholders' focus, which can often be complex. Your take on health literacy certainly stands out as a key factor. What’s interesting is that policymakers identify it as a systemic issue, even though it lacks a traditional policy-type framework. The connection among communication, education, and outcomes strengthens the project's relevance. Further, I liked how you emphasized advocacy as a set of skills and not just a concept. The idea of combining the data with real-world patient stories and presenting solutions recommends practicality and alignment with how decisions are made…
Hi Carolyn!
Thank you for sharing this interview and for doing such important work tackling healthcare disparities. The policymaker you interviewed is ideally positioned to provide valuable insights into the crucial matter you are undertaking and I am sure it was a rich conversation. From what you've shared, I quickly noticed an overlapping sentiment discussed in both our interviews, that certain populations have barriers and or challeneges in navigating healthcare systems which further impacts the care they do or do not receive. There is absolutely no doubt who make up this population of people.
The next thing that caught my attention was highlighting the need for using data to guide decision-making. The benefit of doing so is only as good…
Hello Carolyn!
Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and insightful reflection on your interview with a policymaker. Your discussion clearly highlights the complexity of healthcare policymaking and the critical role of collaboration in shaping meaningful, patient-centered policies. I especially appreciated your emphasis on how policymakers must balance data with real-world constraints such as funding, political priorities, and stakeholder influence. This is often an underrecognized aspect of policy development.
Overall, your reflection underscores the vital role nurses play in bridging clinical practice and policy. Your experience demonstrates that meaningful change requires not only knowledge but also intentional engagement in the policy process. It is encouraging to see how this interview has strengthened your commitment to advocating for improved health literacy…
Your interview offers a clear and insightful look into the realities of state‑level policymaking, particularly as it relates to access, equity, and the persistent challenges faced by underserved populations. The policymaker’s emphasis on access to care, especially in rural and resource‑limited communities, aligns strongly with current Arizona data showing significant provider shortages, rising chronic disease burdens, and widening disparities in health outcomes (Arizona Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). These structural gaps reinforce the policymaker’s point that improving access requires not only clinical solutions but also coordinated policy efforts that address workforce capacity, funding constraints, and system navigation barriers.
Your discussion of health literacy was especially compelling. As the policymaker noted, low health literacy is often overlooked in policy…
